MARCEL DUCHAMP IN HERNE BAY 1913-2013
SYMPOSIUM
As 2013 marks the centenary from Duchamp’s first visit to the United Kingdom, the Herne Bay authorities organize the “Marcel Duchamp in Herne Bay 1913-2013” symposium on 2 August to celebrate and explore the relationship between the artist’s experience of the place and his artwork. The symposium will feature presentations by experts on Duchamp: Paul Franklin – Editor of the Duchamp annual journal, Étant donné – on the subject of Duchamp and the English language, or what is today commonly called ‘Franglaise’; Linda Henderson – Professor of Art History at the University of Texas at Austin, and author of “Duchamp in Context: Science and Technology in the Large Glass and Related Works” – on the scientific sources Duchamp might have encountered at Herne Bay; Michael Taylor – Director of the Hood Museum, Dartmouth (former curator of the Duchamp Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art) – on the two drawings and two notes that Duchamp composed during his stay in Herne Bay; Bradley Bailey – Professor of Art History at the University of St. Louis – who specialises in Duchamp and has published several well-received articles on the artist, who will discuss the subject of games, particularly those that Duchamp might have found on the Herne Bay pier; Kieran Lyons – Head of Fine Art (retired), Department of Art, University of Wales – an English artist who has presented several papers on Duchamp, and who will speak on the source in popular culture that Duchamp might have experienced during his stay in Herne Bay, including film, theatre etc; Cecile Debray-Amar – Curator at the Pompidou Centre – who is currently working on an exhibition of Duchamp as a painter and who will be speaking on Duchamp’s decision to stop painting; and British artist, Jeremy Millar, has also been invited to present his film “Zugzwang (almost complete)” and discuss the piece and its inspiration.
